Metabolomics

0

Metabolomics is defined as the identification and quantification of metabolic products in a biological system. In the past the use of this technology has aided the identification of metabolites associated to complex diseases and monogenic disorders such as inborn errors of metabolisms. Metabolomics refers to metabolite profiling or the differential study of the metabolome between experimental and control groups after an external stimulus is applied (for example biochemical stress or drug treatment).

Mass spectrometry and NMR spectrometry are techniques that are often used for metabolome profiling.  But what advances will propel this technology forward and increase our understanding of metabolites?

As part of this Spotlight, we will explore:

  • Recent advances in target and untargeted metabolomics
  • Comparisons between the use of NMR and MS methods
  • Review the use of metabolomics in drug development and precision medicine
