The first instance of an athlete doping in competition is unclear, although there are examples of sportsmen from the Greek era using natural substances to gain an advantage.
What is clear is that there has been a distinct trend of doping in sport for more than the last 50 years, a trend that has culminated in the current status quo that exists between the anti-doping authorities and athletes that choose to cheat in this way.
