In this conference report we discuss our highlights from the 11th Open Meeting of the European Bioanalytical Forum – Raise the Anchor, Set Sail for Science (Barcelona, Spain; 21–23 November).
- Cell and Gene Therapies – This session provided an update on this expanding field as well as focusing on some of the key challenges requiring solutions. Patrick Bennett (PPD; VA, USA), gave a talk that explored the changing bioanalytical solutions in gene and cellular therapies in which he reviewed the types of technologies used including: cell-based assays, LBA, LC–MS, flow cytometry, ELISpot, IHC and FISH. He explained that study design, patient enrolment and logistics make these projects very complex and how unclear regulations can slow down method validation.
- Biomarker Strategies – As part of this session, Steve Piccoli (GSK; PA, USA) highlighted the need for consensus framework for assay validation for biomarker qualification. Stephanie Traub (Cancer Research; London, UK) discussed this further commenting that in order to develop a drug to treat cancer we need to understand the patient’s selection of biomarkers. She unpacks this further in an exclusive interview with Bioanalysis Zone so stay tuned for her interview in early 2019.

- Practical applications of HMRS – Speakers from both CROs and pharma looked at the realities of implementing HRMS in their laboratories. They discussed the advantages of using HRMS including reduced set-up times, multiple acquisition modes in a single injection and how to get more information from a single injection.
- An evening with bioanalysis 2018 – On Thursday 22 November 2018, at The Dome – level 29, NH Collection Hotel, Barcelona, Spain, the Bioanalysis Zone team hosted an exclusive event to celebrate all things bioanalysis! It was great to see so many of you there and we hope you enjoyed the entertainment and won big on the roulette. Congratulations to Martha who won the Charles River roulette competition winning a GroPro! To view all the photos from the night you will need to log in and follow the steps below.
