International Women’s Day: an interview with Lin Wang


Lin Wang, R&D Specialist, Regeneron (NY, USA)

Lin Wang received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Xiamen University (China) and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University in (NJ, USA) She is also enrolled in the Business and Science Program at Rutgers University to develop a comprehensive understanding of the interface between science and business and look at the revolution of analytical industry from different perspectives.

She started her career in the CRO industry from 2015 and spent over 5 years focusing on method development and validation on both small and large molecules. She is currently working as the R&D specialist in the formulation development group at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NY, USA).

1) What’s your morning and evening routine?

I usually wake up around 7:30am and leave for work around 8:30am. In the evening, I will either read books or do exercises.

2) What excites you the most about your job?

I am on the research and development team. The most exciting part about my job is that I know my contribution may help bring an effective drug to patients and enable them to live a better life.

3) What challenges do you face day to day as a woman?

Balancing the time for taking care of the family and the time I would like to spend on self-improvement.

4) How do you balance these challenges with your working life?

Usually by making a list of priorities and reserving some time for myself as best as I can.

5) What’s your favorite thing to do in your downtime?

Reading.

6) What are the best parts and worst parts of your job?

The best part is that I have gotten the opportunity to be involved in a continuous learning environment. We can discuss new technologies and be inspired by the dynamic research findings.

The worst part is that not all the phenomena observed from the experiments can be well understood. There is still a long way for science exploration.

7) What did you always want to be?

An educator who can explain complicated knowledge in an easy and simple way.

8) Who is your inspirational hero?

Mary Lasker. She was one of the driving forces behind the National Cancer Act.
