PerkinElmer, Inc. (MA, USA) have described their detection, workflow and research solutions being used by their global customers to combat COVID-19. Their customers include speciality and reference diagnostic labs, academia and governmental research institutes, all working to find solutions to the current pandemic. PerkinElmer offer a range of SARS-CoV-2 technology including RT-PCR, high throughput RNA extraction, automation, ELISA and lateral flow-based serology testing.
Anti-SARS-CoV-2 ELISAs for immunoglobulin classes A and G from EUROIMMUN (Lübeck, Germany; a PerkinElmer company), have recently received CE mark and can now be applied to COVID-19 diagnostics. PerkinElmer’s immunoglobulin class G assay has also received US FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) which is reportedly the first incidence of the FDA taking an active interest in validating assays. These tests may help determine how quickly antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be made, which could assist identify people who have developed immunity.
PerkinElmer’s GSP®/DELFIA® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG kit is a fully automated serological assay using DBS samples and has also received CE Mark. The kit is DELFIA®-based (dissociation-enhanced lanthanide fluorescence immunoassay) and is run on the GSP® analyzer, a fully automated and high throughput system used traditionally with newborn screening.
In other news, Beaumont Health Research Institute (MI, USA) is launching America’s largest serological testing study using two PerkinElmer EUROLabWorkstations and EUROIMMUN Anti-SARS-CoV-2 ELISA testing kits.
The Coronavirus Nucleic Acid Detection Kit by PerkinElmer has recently received FDA EUA and is certified under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments to be used in clinical laboratories to detect SARS-CoV-2. EURORealTime SARS-COV-2 has received CE mark and FDA EUA and PerkinElmer have also received an FDA EUA amendment to add their chemagic™ Viral DNA/ RNA 300 Kit H96 and chemagic™ 360 instrument to a new Coronavirus RT-PCR test.
In an effort to increase transparency, PerkinElmer are live streaming their turnaround times for delivery of SARS-CoV-2 tests. Through this they are also hoping to assist testing centers maintain their maximum capacity and enable laboratories to rapidly adjust to public health needs.
PerkinElmer have broad range of total workflow solutions that are reportedly able to assist the rapid processing of clinical diagnostics. In terms of COVID-19, they report their automated SARS-CoV-2 PCR detection workflow solutions can be used with the PerkinElmer New Coronavirus RT-PCR test or any other 2019-nCoV PCR assay. In particular, the JANUS® G3 workstation is able to standardize nucleic acid isolation and PCR assay set-up to alleviate high throughout demands and reduce manual tasks, whilst their LabChip® GX Touch™ Nucleic Acid Analyzer can provide DNA and RNA quantitation and sizing using automated capillary electrophoresis separation.
