“We now have multiple options in almost all areas of MS analysis; we can choose between different ionization modes and different mass analyzers, and have the ability to couple MS with many other detectors and separation techniques.”

From its origins with Goldstein, Wien and Thompson in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, MS has developed and diversified hugely [1,2]. Even in recent history MS has undergone significant advances. We now have multiple options in almost all areas of MS analysis; we can choose between different ionization modes and different mass analyzers, and have the ability to couple MS with many other detectors and separation techniques. This diversity means there are a huge range of applications in which MS can be utilized, from space exploration to pharmaceutical bioanalysis, for both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
