It has been well documented that the current drug-development process is long, expensive and risky, which has led to the entire R&D model of the pharmaceutical industry being questioned for its effectiveness. While opinions differ on how to address these issues in drug development, it is without any doubt that drug discovery (pre-IND) research has to become more productive and efficient in supplying (and re-filling) development pipelines with high-quality candidates with satisfactory efficacy and safety profiles.
